Afterschool Climbing

Transportation is available for afterschool climbing from Upper Blue and Breckenridge Elementary. Students not attending Breckenridge schools are encouraged to participate but need to provide their own transportation.

Financial assistance is available through the Bentley Bedker Scholarship. Applications for the Bedker Scholarship are located at the Front Desk of the Breckenridge Recreation Center. Scholarship money can be applied to climbing program and equipment fees. Please contact the Outdoor Programs Coordinator Sarah Robins for more information at 970-547-4324 or by email.

Cliffhangers (Ages 5-11) 

Cliffhangers is a fun, play-based class for kids who enjoy climbing and want to develop and/or enhance their skills. This class encourages elementary school-aged kids to participate in both weekly and session-long climbing challenges, to learn technical climbing skills, and to practice team work, communication and peer support via numerous fun activities. To ensure individualized attention and exceptional instruction, classes are limited to 10 students per session. After enrolling in Cliffhangers several times, participants are encouraged to enroll in Climbing Club to further develop their climbing skills.

Climbing Club (Ages 6-13) 

The Breckenridge Climbing Club is a fun place for our youth climbers of all ages to get their climbing fix for the week in a relaxed yet fun and educational environment.The Climbing Club is suitable for older kids that have participated in our Cliffhangers program several times and have fully mastered all of the necessary skills (knot tying, top rope belaying, etc.) and who are looking for new challenges. To ensure individualized attention and exceptional instruction, classes are limited to 10 students per Friday session.

Advanced Climbing Team (Ages 8-17) 

The Advanced Climbing Team is the pinnacle of our climbing development program. Members focus on a combination of climbing strength and technique development under our experienced and dedicated coaching staff. Spring sessions also allow participants to prepare for and compete in the USA Climbing Sport Climbing Series. Admittance onto the Advanced Climbing Team is by invitation only and is based on climbing ability, behavior and a lack of safety concerns on the part of our coaching staff. On-Going Youth Climbing Programs

Belay Rides/Try-A-Climb (All Ages) 

Try rock climbing today! Let our professional staff handle the technical side while you enjoy the thrill of climbing. All equipment is provided and time can be divided among as many users as desired. Please complete the online Climbing Waiver prior to your session. Reservations are recommended - please contact the Recreation Center Front Desk at 970-453-1734.

Climbing Skills Check

Do you already know how to climb? Our staff is available to perform the annual skills checks required for all climbers in our gym. Bouldering orientations and top rope or lead climbing assessments are available for free. Once you have a pass, you can boulder or top-rope any time the climbing wall is open and space is available. Lead climbing is allowed only when a Climbing Wall Instructor is on duty.  Please complete the online Climbing Waiver prior to your session. Click here for assessment requirements.

Intro to Bouldering (Ages 6 & Up)

Jump start your bouldering success with our Intro to Bouldering lessons! This program is designed to get you started bouldering as quickly and as confidently as possible. In this one hour lesson, you learn bouldering risk management techniques such as spotting and properly falling, how to understand the bouldering scale used in the gym, how to "read" bouldering problems, how to warm up and the basics of climbing movement. Please complete the online Climbing Waiver prior to your session.
Days: Daily, with advance reservation
Duration: 1 Hour, hour lessons can be reserved back to back for additional instruction.

Fee: $30 per person, per hour


Learn to Top Rope (Ages 8 & Up)

Whether you plan on spending next summer climbing outdoors with friends or would like to start adding the full height of our indoor climbing wall to your workout mix, it's time you learned how to belay. Join our experienced professional staff in this two-hour class as we teach you about the gear involved in roped climbing, how to tie into the rope, and how to belay (the act of managing slack in the rope to keep the climber from falling to the ground should they slip). All equipment is included and upon completion of the class, participants are able to return after 24 hours (to assure skills retention) to have their skills assessed for a top-rope pass. No experience is required to participate. Please complete the online Climbing Waiver prior to your session.

Learn to Lead (Ages 10 & Up)

Ready to take the sharp end of the rope? Lead climbing involves connecting the rope to anchors as you climb adding a new level of challenge and excitement to your climbing experience. Join our professional staff as we teach you to lead belay, lead climb, recognize errors and practice taking falls. Participants must have previous climbing experience, know how to belay a top-rope climber and be able to climb 5.8 comfortably on top-rope. For all classes over 2 hours, we recommend splitting the program over multiple days to maximize learning and retention.

24 hours after the completion of this class, participants are eligible to take the lead climbing skills assessment to be able to lead climb at the Recreation Center Climbing Wall without staff assistance during staffed hours. All equipment is included for the program. No prior lead climbing experience is required. Please wear comfortable clothes and complete the online Climbing Waiver prior to your session.
